downlookingup: The Lady with an Ermine (1490) by Leonardo da Vinci I’m reading Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass and I was very thrilled to read on Wikipedia that the idea of daemons was inspired by a group of paintings, this being one of them. Daemons are the external representation of the soul in the fictional universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy. I saw this in real life at the huge Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at the National Gallery.  It is breathtaking.
